Cost Of Cancer Forces Patients To Choose Food Or Treatment

New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) added questions to their patient questionnaire about food security during cancer treatment. Food security is an issue when the high cost of cancer forces patients to choose between food and their treatment.
They found that nearly 10% of their patients dealt with food insecurity. Those who did were less likely to complete treatment. Early stage breast cancer patients who may be required to stay on expensive medication for many months or years were most likely to have food insecurity.
As a result of their questionnaire, NECS has implemented food assistance for any of their patients in need. They hope to expand the research to assist others around the country.
